Spiral Hydrogen, an Estonian-Dutch deep-tech startup, has raised
€2.7 million in a pre-seed funding round, backed by Superangel, byFounders, and Norrsken Evolve, alongside €0.7 million in grants.
Spiral Hydrogen is developing a novel approach to green hydrogen production based on centrifugal, bubble-free electrolysis. The company’s technology eliminates one of the key inefficiencies in conventional electrolysers—gas bubble formation on electrodes—which can reduce system performance and increase energy consumption.
“Current electrolysers lose up to 30% of input energy because gas bubbles form on the electrodes, blocking active reaction sites and limiting system efficiency,” said
Juri Volodin, Founder and CEO of Spiral Hydrogen. “Our technology solves one of the industry’s most stubborn problems — gas bubbles — and unlocks efficiencies that finally allow the hydrogen economy to decarbonise profitably.”
By routing gases directly through a porous electrode into a dedicated gas channel,
Spiral Hydrogen’s proprietary architecture achieves over 90% efficiency, significantly lowering the levelised cost of hydrogen and bringing green hydrogen closer to cost parity with fossil-based alternatives.
The company will
use the funding to move from lab validation to pilot deployment, building its first centrifugal bubble-free electrolyser system in the Port of Rotterdam in partnership with SwitcH2, a company specialising in offshore ammonia solutions.
The pilot represents a key milestone in validating the technology under real-world industrial conditions.“This funding is a strong validation of our approach, and the pilot in Rotterdam is the next critical step towards commercial scale,”

enable cost-effective decarbonisation across industries such as refining, fertiliser production, steel production, and heavy transport, where hydrogen is a key input. To support its next phase, the company is also expanding its team, hiring engineers and scientists to
accelerate development and deployment.
